This month was, to be honest, a little overwhelming for me.
Lots of putting family and work before myself, which happens sometimes, but is exhausting. Lots of writing for clients, very little writing for myself. Which also happens sometimes.
Projects & Opportunities
- Things are still going great with my new client! The first month with a new company is always a little overwhelming. You both have to get used to each other, and as a freelancer, I have to do a bit of experimenting to figure out what works best for their brand and their audience. The second month goes much more smoothly, and I enjoyed that.
- I got to attend the inaugural screening for a film I worked on last month! It’s both daunting and amazing to see my face up on a big screen, but I love it (even if I don’t love the way my voice sounds.)
- I had to turn down a wonderful acting opportunity this month, and it just about broke my heart. It was a show that I was excited to be part of, a theatre I was excited to work with, and (best of all) it would have earned me my EMC card, a wonderful career step-forward. But, due to day-job type commitments that I could not negotiate, I had to decline the part.
- I took on another new writing client, which means a lot more work, but also a more steady income. Always good when you’re a freelancer.
All these things got me thinking pretty hard about my priorities and what I most want to be doing. Which led to a big decision…
I’m going full-time freelance as of September.
I’d had in the back of my head that I wanted to be fully in charge of my own schedule, but it always seemed like a distant step. A next-time-we-move-so-I-don’t-have-to-look-for-a-job step. But I’ve realized that, while there are always excuses for putting things off, there are also very good reasons to just do it now. The last month confirmed that for me: my life, as it stands, does not really reflect my passions and my priorities.
So it’s time to change that.
Wish me luck!
