A couple weeks ago, I decided to do something that scared me... You might have read about it when it happened. I've just started writing a new novel, and to keep myself focused and on track, I'm going to record my progress here. Back in February, I shared my planned timeline and the professional goals I wanted to achieve with this particular novel. I'm incredibly excited about it, and usually very bad about talking about my writing as it happens, so I'm hoping this particular exercise helps me out! I'm sure I'm going to learn a lot along the way about novel writing, and I'm excited to share it ... Read more
Cheap, Fast, or Good: The Freelance Triangle
When I had one of my websites redesigned last year, I asked a fellow freelancer if she would be willing to give me the name of her designer. I knew, from looking at that freelancer's website, that I LOVED the designers work, and I was sure she'd be able to match the aesthetic I needed. So I got in touch and told her what I was looking for. She sent back some great ideas, and then quoted me a price. I couldn't believe it: only $200! For a full website design, plus logo and header banner. I had been expecting to pay quite a bit more than that, but I certainly wasn't going to argue with such a great price. Given what I'd seen of the quality of her work, it was a steal. ... Read more
Expecting the Worst Will Get You Nowhere

Sure, in my personal life, I can be eternally optimistic and assume that everything will work out the way it should and people are basically good and that my friends and family love me. But when it comes to my work, I tend to be only a step away from panic mode at any given moment. And that's a really bad idea. ... Read more
Working Out While You Work at Home
My exercise habits have changed a lot since I turned freelance. I realize this may seem like a bit of a random topic, but... If you're planning to work from home, you've got to consider the WHOLE picture, and that includes your health. I didn't really take that into consideration when I made the freelance switch. (I didn't take much of anything into consideration, aside from the fact that I knew my current work-life wasn't sustainable.) Don't do what I did then. What I do now is much smarter. ... Read more
A Day in the (Freelance) Life
Last week, I was talking with a director about my work as a freelance writer, and how much grateful I am to be in control of my own schedule now. And I am really grateful. Aside from all the other obvious benefits, like loving the work I do, my heath has improved drastically and it's so much easier to make it to auditions now. She asked me what my typical day looks like working from home, and I think I said something like, "It varies, depending on the day." Which is 100% true. But then I saw Michelle and Read more
