I don’t want to say much about the government shutdown; it is such a sensitive subject, and I don’t want to get into the politics.
But I have a lot of friends who thought they had steady, reliable, 9-5 jobs, and who now suddenly find themselves without things like work, paychecks, and student loan repayments.
It gets a freelance writer thinking.
When you’re working a 9-5 job, you don’t expect to suddenly find yourself without an income. You don’t expect to need an odd job or two to tide you over on your next rent payment. You don’t expect your income to rely on your own hustle.
So, while freelancing has its ups and downs (and don’t even get me started on the fiction writing part of things…) I’m still very grateful for the lessons it has taught me.
As a freelancer, sometimes I may not know where my next paycheck is coming from. I may have a slow month, or a month where I feel utterly overwhelmed. I may not have the security of a 9-5.
But I’ve learned to rely on myself, and I trust my own ability to make it work if I hustle.
It definitely makes a freelance writer grateful.
